Women in the Arts Exhibition: Celebrating Women’s History Month “ When All the Artists are Women “ February 12, 2010 through March 21, 2010 Exhibition Summary The NACC is proud to host an art exhibition that will showcase the many talented women artists from Western New York and Southern Ontario. To allow the exhibition to represent a wide range of artistic mediums it will not be limited to a specific genre or medium, therefore, we will accept all two dimensional and three dimensional works of art. General Information Customers who purchase art will be able to take art they purchase with full payment at the end of the exhibition. The opening reception for the exhibition will be on Friday, February 12, 2010 from 6 to 8 pm with refreshments. The NACC Gift Shop will be open and we encourage artists to display associated note cards, prints etc. for sale. Eligibility for Gallery Exhibit Work must be original and made by the artist.

ReNU Rhapsody: Niagara Falls Neighborhood Revitalization Meetings Rhapsody: 1) any ecstatic or enthusiastic speech or writing 2) musical composition of free, irregular form, suggesting improvisation Who: Niagara Falls community development/revitalization organizations What: A forum for Niagara Falls agencies to network and share different strategies and best practices for neighborhood revitalization initiatives as well as strengthen and build upon relationships and collaborative efforts with local organizations. Also included could be opportunities for professional development training through guest speakers talking on topics applicable to neighborhood improvement projects. Where: To be held at community partner sites throughout the city. When: Host meetings once per month **Note: We are aiming to create the structure and content of these meetings based on input from community agencies and stakeholders who are actively involved with neighborhood revitalization projects in Niagara Falls. An initial meeting to discuss these topics and create an environment to facilitate the best participation is scheduled for Thursday, January 28, 2010 at 10:00 am at the Niagara Falls Weed and Seed 18th Street Resource Center (18th Street and Linwood Avenue, NF). Mitch Hall in his NYC blog reported that NYC RECEIVING $20 MILLION IN STIMULUS FUNDS:

City Will Use Funds to Assist Homebuyers, Purchase and Renovate Foreclosed Units and Develop Vacant Sites

The grants were awarded competitively to applicants who developed the most innovative ideas to address the impact of the foreclosure crisis on local communities while demonstrating they have the capacity to be responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars. The City will use the funds to buy, renovate and resell foreclosed properties in the most-affected neighborhoods to low- and moderate-income families

It makes me wonder what is happening in Western New York and are we getting any of that stimulus funding to solve some of the worst vacant housing in our area. It has been reported that in Niagara Falls 1 in 5 homes are vacant, more people are moving away and organizations like Niagara Rises are struggling to make a difference.

There is a large number of homes that today sit vacant and are falling into disrepair, what if we were able to reclaim them and turn a negative into a positive. Community building seems a simple concept, but so difficult to enact. Niagara Rises has a lot of great ideas, why not get involved with the exciting group? Find out our plan to work with Niagara University and the City of Niagara Falls. Can’t make it in person — no problem! This meeting will be broadcast live on the Internet!

Feed Your Soul–the company behind the sold-out success of the summer, Nickel City Chef–is proud to present Western New York with a competition that may be even sweeter! Nickel City Cake Challenge is a one-time event taking place on Saturday, February 13th, 2010 from 1 – 3:30 p.m. This challenge is a live, head-to-head cake decorating competition featuring three of Western New York’s most creative cake artists. Those decorators include: Tony Concialdi of Panaro’s, Zilly Rosen of Zillycakes and Susan Spider of Pumpernick n’ Pastry Shop. In just two hours, each of the cake decorators will attempt to complete a cake that meets specific criteria and is in keeping with the theme “Wedding in Buffalo”. The competition will be held at Artisan Kitchens & Baths, home of the Nickel City Chef series. In Artisan’s stunning, loft showroom, each artist and their assistant will work from one of Artisan’s three $100,000 kitchens in front of a panel of professional judges and a live audience. In addition to the exciting live competition, guests will have the opportunity to snack from our custom hot chocolate bar and confectionery station, sample sweets from our partners Lake Effect Ice Cream and Niagara Popcorn, view cake decorating demonstrations and vote for their favorite cake from the day’s amateur entries. HARD ROCK INTERNATIONAL LENDS MEMORABILIA TO BUFFALO MUSEUM OF SCIENCE GOOD VIBRATIONS EXHIBIT

JANUARY 2010 (BUFFALO, NY)–The Buffalo Museum of Science has teamed up with the Hard Rock Cafe, Niagara Falls, USA, to feature pieces from Hard Rock International’s world-famous memorabilia collection for the museum’s current “Good Vibrations” exhibit, running through Jan. 31, 2010. The collaboration marks the first time the two organizations have ever partnered together. Museum guests can also view the “Treasures of the Hard Rock Cafe” documentary, which details how the company acquires its rock and roll artifacts from various sources including the famous artists themselves.

“When we heard that the museum was planning an exhibit that focuses on the science of sound and music, we were eager to get involved and help arrange the loan of pieces from the Hard Rock memorabilia collection,” said Dominic Verni, general manager of the Hard Rock Cafe – Niagara Falls, USA.

Given the name of the exhibit, one particular brown burst hollow-bodied guitar used by Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys, was hand chosen by Hard Rock International’s team of memorabilia experts to loan to this exhibit.

In addition to the Beach Boys guitar, other pieces on display include items from bands such as Anthrax, The Cult, ZZ Top, Buckcherry, and Kiss.

Although these particular pieces are on view only until Jan. 31, the Hard Rock Cafe – Niagara Falls, USA has hundreds of pieces of rock and roll memorabilia always on display. An additional 1,200 key pieces of the Hard Rock’s collection can also be explored at the company’s interactive memorabilia site at memorabilia.hardrock.com, where one can search by artist, type, decade, genre and location.

In addition to displaying the unique items on loan from Hard Rock International, “Good Vibrations” also features select items from the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame and the museum’s own collection of over 700,000 specimens to help illustrate the history and culture of sound. Interactive sound stations from Exploratorium in San Francisco and hands-on activities allow guests to explore the physics and behavior of sound.

The Buffalo Museum of Science is hosting family-friendly musical performers on Saturday and Sunday afternoons as well as concerts with local bands every other Friday night throughout the run of “Good Vibrations”. Performances and activities are included with general museum admission and free for museum members. Saving for a cause

For those of our visitors that have elementary age children, do you know about the great program called Box Tops for Education? My son’s school (Maple Ave, here in Niagara Falls) collects the Box Tops that are on many of the products most of us buy and use daily. For me it’s a no brainer because I am purchasing the product anyway…Pillsbury rolls anyone?! I clip the box tops, and then every month send in what I have the school receives 10 cents per box top turned in. Yes I know that doesn’t sound like too much but if you can get 10 box tops from 200 students then there is $200.00…There are neat collection sheets that the kids can color and the attach the Box Tops to. There are also links through their website to different companies that will give a donation per purchase.
